Isaac Blakey was my Great Grandfather, the son of Andrew White and Julia (Finney) White. He was enslaved in Missouri and was born in 1845. He was a teenager when he received his freedom. And joined the Union Army in Mississippi 1863 – 1866 as Private Isaac BLAKER, he was a farmer.
Isaac spoke of his injury in affidavits. He was wounded while drilling at a camp in Natchez , Mississippi in the Spring of 1864. He said that received a bayonet wound in his left leg. He couldn’t recall who did it. ~ It’s sad that he didn’t receive treatment for his wound after it happened.
The reports descripted the wound as it was in 1890. Isaac said that the wound was a running sore since the War. Isaac as an older adult was about 5′ 9″ to 5′ 11. And he weighted about 175 to 185. It’s amazing to know this. They did his temperature too
In Isaac’s life he married twice. His first wife, Martha (Scott) Blakey passed leaving twin sons. Isaac remarried, Rachel ( Lefew / Leftridge.) They had 18 children. Isaac out lived both his wives.
Isaac had poor health as he grew older. He had disease of the leg, varicose veins, kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, neuralgia, rheumatism and Lord knows what else. He passed on Dec 23, 1917 at the age of 72. He lived with 53 years with that wounded leg and in pain. He was a strong man.
It’s nice to know what our ancestors’ health issues.
If my Great Grandpa Isaac won’t have been wounded, I may have never when this.
I’m thankful that this document exist.
I’m thankful that my Great Grandpa lived to see his freedom and tell his story.
